Visitors get a sense of who Kellie Burke is the moment they enter her stunning Hartford, Connecticut home.

From the award-winning kitchen and bath to the eclectic Mad Men/Downton Abbey-inspired family room decor, it's immediately apparent that the renowned interior designer is in a league of her own.

"I don't think I've ever really blended in my whole life," Kellie told New England Home in 2017. "I like to be a little over the top. Maybe a lot over the top."

Kellie is Ready for a New Chapter in Her Life

Kellie had wanted to live in Governors Square since she first glimpsed the historic neighborhood in grade school. She finally realized her dream when 1160 Prospect Avenue came on the market in 2006. Constructed in 1921, the home was bedecked in shag carpeting and floor-to-ceiling floral wallpaper when she found it. Yet it wasn't difficult for Kellie – an expert in historic homes – to see the potential that lay beneath.

Now fully renovated with far too many updates to mention, this gorgeous estate remains true to its historic nature while featuring modern accents and detailing that make it truly unique.

While the home will always hold a special place in her heart, Kellie’s ready for a new chapter in her life. She has decided to put the 11,000-square-foot mansion on the market, giving admirers of her Old World elegance - punk sensibility aesthetic a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make it their own.

Award-Winning Gourmet Kitchen and Master Bath

The award-winning gourmet kitchen, complete with a dramatic vaulted ceiling, is truly the heart of the home. Kellie and her husband had already completed one renovation when a water pipe burst, flooding the kitchen and destroying the ceiling all the way to the attic.

"My husband saw dollar signs," she told New England Home. "I saw opportunity."

Her new design called for eliminating the old servant's quarters, raising the ceiling to 22  feet, and installing massive floating timbers overhead. Painted and distressed Habersham cabinets, faux patent-leather walls in a crocodile pattern, breakfast chairs finished with hand-rubbed silver foil and matching leather, and a large lantern topped with a beaded peacock-feather canopy make for a truly eye-catching space. But the kitchen's piece de resistance is the ceiling, where Kelly Wearstler paper in a black-and-white crosshatch provides graphic impact overhead.

Kellie took a similar approach to camouflage the drywall in her boutique hotel-like ( and also award-winning) master bath, with broad black-and-white stripes on the walls creating a striking contemporary background for the ornate Rococo-style vanity.

Former Ballroom is Now a Family Room Fit for Entertaining

The family room is every bit as intriguing as the rest of the home. A former ballroom, the 44-foot by 21--foot space once hosted elaborate and festive parties for the mansion’s first resident, former Republican governor Henry Roberts.

"The first thing I did was install the disco ball," Kellie remembers.

While the space with its brass elephant-adorned bar (in honor of the former governor) remains an entertainment hub, the atmosphere also manages to be cozy and inviting at the same time. In one area of the room, red damask wing chairs with embracing curved backs and uncommonly deep sectional in "Elvis blue velvet" form a welcoming cocoon perfect for family movie nights.

In another, mid-century modern–style chairs resting atop a round, leopard-patterned rug combine to create a sophisticated seating area even Don Draper would have loved.

Hartford Offers a Truly Amazing Quality of Life

This beautifully designed 7 bedroom, 8 ½ bath mansion sits on more than an acre of land surrounded by a swimming pool, tennis courts, beautifully manicured grounds, and breathtaking views of the fantastic Hartford skyline.

As if all that were not enough, the home is located in one of the country's top-rated communities.  In fact, for the 11th straight year in a row,  U.S. News & World Reports has named Hartford one of the 11 best cities to live in the United States for quality of life. Along with its rolling hills, wooded neighborhood, and lively central business district that hosts several historic attractions and unique entertainment venues, Hartford also boasts vineyards, state parks, and ski slopes, providing residents with plenty of opportunities for year-round recreation.

"Don't let the historic architecture fool you," the report states. "Even as one of the oldest metro areas in America, Hartford, Connecticut, has a lot to offer, both old and new."
